These are the software roles you can leverage for remote working

The news that more than 40% of software engineers only want remote jobs won’t come as much of a surprise to anyone who codes for a living. The figure comes from a State of Software Engineers report from last year, which also found that 21% of engineers said they’d quit their jobs immediately if asked to come back into the office.

A more moderate 49% said they would start looking for another job if that was the case. The fact is, most software engineers are what’s known as sole contributors. These are people who don’t have management tasks, and who work independently on projects without managing or overseeing the work of others.

Sole contributors are typically responsible for their own workload, making decisions and executing tasks within their area of expertise or responsibility. The pandemic did a number on many tech workers in that it shone a bright light on the fact that being in the office all the time isn’t particularly necessary for the majority of software pros.

There are, of course, cases where you do need to be on site. Some roles, especially in defense and aerospace companies, may involve sensitive information or require security clearances, making it necessary for work to be done in a controlled office environment.

Or, if you’re in hardware-related development, access to physical hardware in a lab setting might be crucial. Regulatory requirements in finance or healthcare could also mean that certain activities must be performed on site.

But many other software roles are suited to the sort of deep focus work you can do at home, in a quiet, undisturbed setting. Data from Upwork says that by 2025, around 32.6 million Americans (or 22% of the workforce) will be working remotely.

Software jobs to leverage for remote working

Because software engineers are in such demand, they have more leverage when it comes to asking for a remote role.

In particular, if you’re looking for a job in natural language processing, blockchain engineering, front and back end as well as full stack, cloud computing, version control with Git and GitHub, database management or cybersecurity, then you’ve got the best possible chance of securing the working conditions that work for you.

These are all highly sought-after, which gives those with the right skills more options. So, if you’re ready to put this to the test, then the VentureBeat Job Board is a good place to start your job search.
