Nationwide remote advertised salaries are around $8,500 higher than on-site salaries, for the same job. In San Diego, that difference is $10,852. The study, conducted by Ringover, a cloud-based telecom provider, looked at advertised salaries on LinkedIn in June, for 30 types of jobs in 30 U.S. cities. A bigger boost for remote work is one key way San Diego’s salaries stood out, compared to the national trend. There’s one more way San Diego bucked trends: In most cases, hybrid workers — who work at home and on-site each week — earn close to what remote workers do. But in San Diego, they earn significantly less than both remote and on-site workers.San Diego recruiter insight
Julie Brown, the president of SDI Staffing, a San Diego recruiting firm that specializes in insurance and financial services, said she’s not seeing companies offering more for remote positions.“Our clients pay the same regardless if in-person or remotely,” she wrote in an email interview. “We have seen clients willing to pay more to get staff to come into the office in some areas.”But, Brown added, the COVID-19 pandemic led to an increase in salaries for remote jobs, as employers competed for talent that was not necessarily local. “What we did see when the pandemic started as that smaller agencies in the Inland Empire area/Temecula area who had traditionally been able to pay less to an experienced candidate who did not want to commute into San Diego, were now seeing competition from larger agencies in San Diego who offered remote. We saw a number of candidates leave their job for the remote role and get a significant increase in pay,” she said.A study from the Society for Human Resource Management that looked at trends from 2021 and 2022 found that remote workers may earn less than on-site, as employers boosted pay to entice people back to the office. So can copywriters — where advertised pay is around $82,000 for hybrid roles, and between $60,000 and $70,000 for on-site or remote. Only five jobs paid more for on-site or office work: case managers, social media managers, sales assistants, project managers and financial advisers.Since June, when Ringover collected this salary data, the job market has slowed slightly, with the economy adding 209,000 jobs, which is almost 100,000 fewer than in May. If the labor market further slackens, that could impact whether remote or on-site jobs get more applicants — and more compensation.
